UW2: The Thieves' Arm

The Glorantha Digest and other mailing lists can be confusing to new members and old hands alike, as postings are often riddled with abbreviations for the old and new Glorantha-related publications, as well as future (or bygone) projects, and a mix of slang shorthands (including some we've cooked up ourselves over the years).

This list makes no pretence to completeness or definitiveness: abbreviations were included (or not) based on my own assessment of their utility. In particular, some of the more irritating Internet "jokey" slang terms have been omitted. If you think I've omitted something useful, please email me with suggestions or comments.

The Abbreviations have been divided into a dozen or so categories, as follows:

  • abbreviation refers to a convenient shorthand for some (usually frequently-discussed) feature of Glorantha. A brief explanation is provided to give the context for each of these.

  • author refers to one of the main creators of published Gloranthan material.

  • book/box refers to a supplement for Gloranthan gaming.

  • freeform refers to one of the live-action role-playing games set in Glorantha. Usually best to mention which version of a freeform you are referring to, as some have been run more than once (e.g: Home of the Bold x4, How the West was One x3, Life of Moonson x3).

  • magazine (#) refers to a magazine which publishes (or used to publish) Gloranthan articles. The number in parentheses is the number of issues. Note that Wyrms Footnotes, Heroes, Different Worlds and White Wolf are no longer being printed; White Dwarf is now a miniatures catalogue and has not printed any Gloranthan material for over a decade; RQ Adventures, Codex, New Lolon Gospel and Book of Drastic Resolutions appear to be moribund, though "next issues" have in the past been promised. Currently active Gloranthan magazines include Tales of the Reaching Moon, Tradetalk, and Unspoken Word (though the latter is no longer claiming to be a magazine - cf. IWS).

  • project refers to a projected Gloranthan publication which has not yet seen -- and will perhaps never see -- the light of day. This includes "golden oldies" (like the old HeroQuest, Masters of Luck and Death and RuneQuest: Adventures in Glorantha) as well as relative newcomers (like the new HeroQuest and Imperial Lunar Handbook). While some of these may be "works-in-progress", there is enough confusion about their present (or future) form that in many cases various gaming or playtest groups have "invented" their own versions. Nothing said about the contents of any of these proposed projects is likely to be definitive.

  • publisher refers to a past or present publisher or distributor of Gloranthan material.

  • rules refers to a set of Gloranthan role-playing rules.

  • slang refers to a commonly-used abbreviation which does not refer to any feature of Glorantha. Some of these are used for comic or ironic effect, while others derive from the wider Internet and have no specific Gloranthan meaning.

  • source refers to one of the recent books of Gloranthan source material published by Greg Stafford. Warning: other than King of Sartar, these sources have been published in more than one form, and page numbers alone are insufficient to identify a reference. Always include an edition reference, printing date or other way of telling which version of a source you are referring to.

  • wargame refers to a Gloranthan wargame.

Posters often refer to a source by its initials. In the listings below, italics indicate a single book or booklet (where a page number is sufficent to locate any reference), bold indicates a magazine name (where the specific issue must be identified), and bold italics a boxed set (where the precise component within the box must be identified; some of these will have a separate italic listing). Some sources are never conveniently abbreviated (e.g: Prosopaedia, a booklet from GoG); others are hardly ever referred to (and thus not included here); still others are referred to by the box in which the book or booklet appeared (e.g: page references to G:G usually refer to GB; those to GoG usually mean its CB; etc.).

[1] Greg Stafford is notorious for his habit of revising his own previously-stated or -published opinions about Glorantha, often to the detriment of established rules systems, campaigns, background material, etc. While we have to live with this as a necessary consequence of Greg's (and our own) continuing creative work with Glorantha, at times (as in the "Elmal/Yelmalio" business) it does seem to take the biscuit. Consequently, "gregging" and "gregged" are commonly used to refer to articles, theories, campaigns, etc. which made perfectly good Gloranthan sense at the time they were written, but which have subsequently been victims of Greg's change of mind, more recent publications, etc.
